Ever since seeing Exit Through The Gift Shop, I have been fascinated with the identity of Banksy, his relationship with Shepard Fairey and the joke they are playing on the art community. If you haven’t seen it, you have to Netflix it and report back with your opinion on the mockumentary.
Anyhow, I’ve said that Shepard Fairey is Banksy and is therefore creating Mr. Brainwash’s art as well to play a joke on the art community and those who buy it. It’s sort of a big “F You” to everyone paying to hang these hideous pieces on their wall. People have mostly objected, but I’ve finally found proof.
The image on the left is a piece that Fairey has just released under his OBEY moniker. As you can see, it is very similar to the image on the right which is a piece created by Mr. Brainwash. Same dripping technique, similar stencil image. Fairey is finally giving us hints.
